Meet Elijah Cosby, the national winner of the Technology and Entrepreneurship category of the 2023 Ingenious+ innovation challenge. His innovation, U-VAD (Ultrasonic Visual Assistance Device), is a wearable assistive device designed to help individuals with severe sight loss navigate their surroundings with ease.
U-VAD uses ultrasonic sensors to detect obstacles in the user’s path and gives auditory messages through headphones or earbuds to indicate the distance of the obstacle. This feature allows users to build confidence and navigate unfamiliar areas with ease.
Elijah’s innovation addresses the daily struggles of individuals with severe sight loss and provides them with a greater sense of independence and safety. The wearable object detection assistive device has the potential to improve the quality of life for many people with disabilities. As a national winner of the Ingenious+ competition, Elijah has demonstrated his ability to innovate for good and make a positive impact on his community and beyond.
