Competition Bureau

The Competition Bureau is an independent law enforcement agency. We protect and promote competition in Canada.

We’re active in protecting competition in several key ways. We investigate alleged anti-competitive practices and competitor collaboration. We also review mergers and acquisitions to understand if they could harm competition. We examine marketing practices to determine if they could be false or misleading. We’re empowered to take cases to court, if necessary, or to refer cases to Canada’s public prosecutors.

We also act as Canada’s competition expert. We promote pro-competitive policies and regulations by advocating before all levels of government. We’re also active in building awareness and compliance with the law by conducting outreach and by building free, plain language educational resources about the law.

Our actions are guided by the principle that competition is good for Canadians – it results in lower prices for consumers, as well as increased choice and greater innovation.
